Were you ever naughty as a child and your parents said they were going to count to 5?

Before they got to 5 you’d do whatever is was you had to do to avoid being punished. I know my Mum said she did this with me. Maybe that’s why doing this with my daughter. The thing is, I can say to her… ‘I’m going to count to 5′… And she’s sorting out whatever needs sorting on the count of 1 or 2 or even before I get to 1 sometimes. So if I ever did get to 5 I don’t know what I’d do.

When I have to employ this form of discipline we are generally away from home so the naughty step is not an option. A good old fashioned telling off seems to be the only path to take because the very nature of the count to 5 technique means the child is to expect something bad on the count of 5. So that’s a one to one talking to on the same level out.

Let’s hope I don’t ever have to get to 5.
