This is Wayne's World

How to regulate sleep to make me more alert…. Or something like that.

What time do you get up?

When your alarm wakes you Monday to Friday and then on a weekend you have a sleep in? That’s what I do. Although a sleep in isn’t what it used to be with my daughter waking myself and my Queen by storming into our room when she’s awake. And because of all the inconsistent snoozing and lazy weekend mornings I found myself tired through the day or early evening. To the point where I was falling asleep sat in my chair at home after work. Well that time is dedicated to playing with my daughter so sleeping isn’t an option. For both our sakes.

Well I figured there has to be a better way to regulate sleep patterns to stop me from feeling tired through the day. So I decided to take action and start getting up at the same time every morning……
Including weekends!
This included me putting my alarm forward half an hour from half past six to six o clock in the morning.

Sounds crazy but there is method behind the madness

The main reason for the alarm reseting from half 6 to 6am was to allow enough time to walk the first half of my journey to work before jumping on the bus. That’s a thirty minute brisk walk. This is due to my lack of exercise. I figured why not take out time for a stroll in the morning by combining it with my trip to work. So for this reason it had to be six o clock. Bloody early.

I was doing this for only a couple of weeks when two things started happening.

Number one

I would get up with my alarm through the week but feel like going straight back to bed, snoozing my alarm to allow an extra half an hour and going back to bed. Alas skipping the morning walk and leaving me feeling tired throughout the day. Exactly what I didn’t want!

Number two

I started cheating during weekends and just (in the end) not even setting the alarm.

Tut tut….

So now it’s written it becomes law. No more wimping out through the week and no more lazy boy tricks at the weekend. I go to bed when I’m tired whatever the time and get up at 6am. Eventually my body will regulate this pattern of getting up at the same time making the ‘go to bed’ messages sent to my brain clearer. Seems straight forward enough but will it work?
Tomorrow morning is my first weekend 6am start…. Or at least first weekend start on my second attempt. I shall do this for a month and then and only then decide if it has had any benefit on my overall well being and day to day alertness.
You shall be kept notified.

UPDATE

OK so the first Saturday didn’t go so well. In fact after getting up at six I then went out of my way to arrange for my daughter to remain entertained in her room so I could steal some extra bed time. Although I didn’t go back to sleep so maybe the experiment can continue with a slight rule bend….. I wake at six every morning without been strict about getting up and about at six. That way like this morning I can collect my thoughts in a horizontal position. I’m sure as the weekends progress I’ll feel encouraged to get up rather than simply just wake up.

I shall keep you posted….
