That’s right. Expendables is coming and its the film will (hopefully) take us all back (in our heads) to a time when the action movie was king. The kind of film where Sly, Arnie & Van Damme were the big stars.
So I was looking over the cast of the Expendables and there are some exciting names to be read. Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin & Mickey Rourke. It all screams high octane action. But wait a minute….What did you say? Dolph Lundgren!?! Who the fuck is that? Oh that’s right the guy that makes straight to video poor action movies. Isn’t he?
No.
Incorrect.
I admit I was surprised to read his name but it got me thinking about the movies I’d seen him in. And the titles kept popping into my head and I thought. ‘What a raw deal Dolph was dealt. Always playing second fiddle to his contemporaries. Unfair because he’s made some quickly forgotten about gems. And lets not forget he’s also currently making a Universal Soldier sequel with Jean Claude. Check it out!
So here it is then. My blow by blow analysis of the best of Dolph…..In no particular order…..
Comic book adaptation and the best version made for the big screen. Good lone man hell bent on revenge plot with lots of quality gun slinging action. The only annoying thing with this film was the annoying Mafia boss’ son. Smack him Dolph. Very dark in parts and very violent too. See this before taking on the other versions.
‘I come in peace’ It hiss’s. ‘You go in peices’ Dolph retorts. Quality alien action with the good old miss matched sidekick/partner banter. Slightly annoying that the Aliens keep meeting up for a quick shoot off, destroy everything in there path and completely miss each other. Come on! Still that said its still a great movie.
I don’t need to say anything about this film other then……’I must break you’. ‘If he dies, he dies.’ ‘You will lose.’ And ‘Whatever he hits……He destroys!’
Brandon Lee pops in to help out here and Tia Carrere gets naked. Oh yeah and Dolph kicks his way to victory against a bunch of Yakuza baddies. Spiritual and tough. I like this one but I don’t like Brandon Lee but that’s another post!
Who as a young boy didn’t like He-man? I loved He-man and collected the figures so when this came out I think I was around 12 and needed. I mean NEEDED to see this so my folks took me along to the cinema and……Oh boy it blew my mind! I saw it again not so long back and its a good film. No really, it is. Apart from Gwildor, who is mildly annoying this is an enjoyable romp.
Van Damme may be the star here but without Dolph this wouldn’t be as good as it is. A worthy bad guy for Van Damme to do a kick on. A very good effort and during the early 90′s this was big (for B-Movie action geeks like me). ‘Nice necklace. I’ve one at home made from noses’. Or whatever he said……….
