But it should have been soooo good. After all it was the film adaptation of an awesome game. So why did the film fail on so many levels?
First of all and for the record I’m a Van Damme fan. I was brought up on Bruce Lee, Van Damme & Jackie Chan movies so this isn’t a ‘Van Damme is shit’ rant. Van Damme on the other hand is OK. Acts within his capability in this film and kind of gets away with it even though (once again the rest of the cast are bad actors) he didn’t sport a Guile hair cut. Points lost!
The inclusion of one of the weaker characters, Cammy and in particular the actress playing her (actress??!!) Kylie Minogue! Come on. Bad move. How is Charlene from Neighbours ever going to pull off (ahem) the tough girl, fighter, soldier look and convince the viewer she’s not to be messed with? Well fucked if I know the answer and neither did Kylie because she was shit!
Now, maybe I’m wrong but when you reach the end baddie in a game this superior brute is generally one tough cookie and big and mean and frustrates you to high Heaven! So why in Gods name was Raul Julia playing M Bison. This isn’t the Adams family! I’m sure the guy can act but he was a shit Bison. Not very menacing. Not very big and didn’t seem too tough either.
Blanka.
The lamest Blanka I’ve ever seen. It was like been at a fancy dress party and someone coming as Blanka. Looking like the movie character and being applauded for all your efforts but if you had a budget bigger then someones fancy dress outfit budget then I’m expecting a monster to come from the Brazilian Jungle and frighten the shit out of me before electrocuting my balls off !!!
……..were bad too! Sigh…..
I don’t think it was the poorly adapted characters, the actors, fighting or effects even though these elements meant points deducted. The reason it was so bad is I think that the desire for competition was striped from you when you watched the movie. When you played the game you loved you were up against an opponent designed to beat you and so made the outcome and journey different every time. The game was fantastical competition at its very best! The film was a lame attempt at cashing in on a franchise and seriously, if you liked it……Well. God help us all
