This is Wayne's World

Hardcastle Crags……And the need to invest in hiking boots!

This is my Sunday morning at a beautiful group of walks next to stream and woodland.

A National Trust site just past Hebden Bridge. The day started with a full car park and this car park is narrow enough without having a parade of cars all fighting for a spot! The cars in front of us just drove out to find a parking space elsewhere. Not us. We drove round the muddy, hilly, tightly packed hill spot a couple of times until as luck would have it, someone left……Put on my Ayrton Senna mask and raced into the vacant space…..

Now before myself, my Queen and our Daughter set off out on this Autumn walk we laughed at how ill prepared we were in terms of good hiking kit. I don’t think white Adidas trainers and blue denim jeans (with the legs rolled up to not get them wet and muddy) pass as good walking gear. This notion was confirmed when climbing a set of the wettest, muddiest old stone and wooden stairs along the red route a nice Gentleman passed comment on my footwear (and laughed)……I laughed with him because I know what I looked like. Oh well, on we went.

Because we had a over excited 2 year old in tow we thought it best we take the yellow route (easy to you and me) but 10minutes into our relaxing Autumn walk (as we had earlier penned it) we found a detour down the hill and off the road so like fools we took it…….It led onto the red route (difficult to you and me)……Well not difficult so much but to a 2 year girl with wellies on I’d say nearly impossible. Fun and games ensued….Basically the walk went from a nice stroll to cliffhanger with Sly!

At any time of year this National Trust site would look stunning but during October it really is special with its multi layered water coloured trees and carpet bombed leafy floor. Damp and shimmery rocks with foggy breaks through the trees. And lets face it. You really feel it when there’s a cold breeze in your lungs and you need a coat and hat.

If you would like to go yourself and I do recommend it then head on to Halifax, drive through Kings Cross and towards Hebden Bridge. Just after hitting Hebden Bridge take a left onto the A6033 and then left onto Midgehole Road. Keep going on the windy narrow road and you’ll hit Hardcastle Crags. Park & enjoy.

Here are some pics of our day…….
