I’m about to tell you a joke. It has a beginning, a middle bit and it ends with a punchline that may make you laugh. It may not. Because I don’t know what you find funny, only you do and you will decide whether or not to laugh at my joke. After all different people find different things funny.

Don’t they?

Well no apparently. We are all supposed to laugh when we are told to. When everyone else laughs. When a TV shows producers tell us to laugh by playing canned laughter. Presumably so we know we are witnessing a joke. Fucking rubbish! Nearly all sitcoms & sketch shows are guilty of this. Why do they do it? Do they think that we’re all that numb that its necessary to sell the show?

The biggest canned laughter crime surely is what I saw the other day when I saw a repeated episode of the old American kids show, The Banana Splits. Constant canned laughter all the way through it. I couldn’t believe my ears! Children don’t need it. They will find the oddest thing funny and laugh at it, simple. They certainly don’t need telling or prompting. Or do they? So that when they grow older they think they find something funny so something can be sold to them. Don’t you fucking laugh, I’m being serious! I just wish I was young enough to not really understand something well enough to not find it funny! Nowadays I just wait around for someone else to start laughing so I can join in knowing that what I’m laughing at must be funny. Because heaven forbid I don’t miss the joke……….
